In The Fifties and Sixties photography of the female physique was quite popular. At the same time the culture of the era dictated that women were not considered to be interested in the male physique, so the ‘beefcakes’ as a parallel to the ‘cheesecakes’ were made to entice gay men more than women. One also has to take in account that photography was a typical male thing at the time so there were very few female photographers around. The ones who did in fact produce male nudes were only recognized by the end of the 20th century.

Les Bigarrures

New Exhibit added:

This series of French illustrations from the book Les Bigarrures was first published in 1799. The works were signed by the completely unknown William C.B. Much later these artworks were attributed to Vivian Denon. Both text and illustrations were made between Denon’s return from Bonaparte’s Egyptian Expedition and his nomination as curator of the newly inaugurated Musée de Louvre under the reign of Napoleon I.

Chinese Mystery Art

We are here to feature erotic art and if necessary to give you some background information on the material we present. If we can’t find the answers we are looking for in our well-stocked library, there is always Google, of course.

The chain of polished pieces of bone as shown above is held together by some red cotton yarn and is made in China, because the images carved into the pieces of bone are obviously Chinese. The images have a strong resemblance to imagery we have seen in Chinese bridal books. They depict a variety of sexual positions.

One of our oldest members of AMEA brought it back from Shanghai, where he bought it from a man in the street. We know the chain is not unique, because we have seen several identical pieces at auction sites, but again without any background information or a date when these objects were made.

We know we have about 11% Chinese visitors on this site, and we are switching roles for a change. Furthermore, we are asking YOU to come up with extra information on this beautiful piece of art.

The Artist

There are so many misconceptions about the work of an artist. Imagination runs wild, of course. I guess the maker of this short film has never seen a painter at work, but that makes this short film so cute.
A realistic film of an artist at work would be so boring!

Mark Blanton

In the early days, there were AMEA forums, called the Hidden Archives, and there was one forum dedicated to the work of artists who regularly visited AMEA. Mark Blanton was one of them, and the antique art of the Romans and Greeks really put the hook in him. He was strictly a pinup artist at the time, in the best American tradition. His craftsmanship was unmatched within the Hidden Archives. The result of him being inspired by ancient art, was a series of drawings he labelled Satyromania.

Red Light District 1970s Amsterdam

Photojournalist Max van Norden, frustrated that he was not allowed to photograph the sex workers, started drawing them. He admitted that he could not draw very well. Still, these images captured the essence of an era that is long gone.

These images were originally published in Penthouse and were accompanied by short stories, written in Dutch. We aim to translate these stories, and publish them in an e-Book that will soon be available in the download section of our shop.

This will be a publication with some background information and, of course, all drawings will be part of this publication.

We are quite naïve

While waiting for a payment processor to review the site, we could have posted a lot of very romantic images to avoid being denied. That is what we should have done, if we were entrepreneurs with a very flexible mind, willing to compromise anything in order to make a buck.

But we are no entrepreneurs, we are collectors and we hate censorship. We are willing to educate, to explain even, but that is as far as it goes. Then again, we could have waited to post the exhibit: The Brutal Art of André Collot. But, we didn’t. Let’s leave it to others to censor.

What to do?

We started collecting Erotica way before the first AmeaNet site saw the light of day in 1996. The collection contains millions of images, but also countless short movies and many complete 8mm films. The 8mm movies are being digitized, but a lot of them are not considered to be public domain, yet. So, there is a lot of work ahead, getting those licenses and looking for a platform to stream that material from. Which will not be easy with ever tightening censorship rules. Vimeo is an option, but frankly we think of them as an expensive bunch of… Well, you know how some techies are. Autism is certainly not a reason to lock people up, but they are not really easy to work with, either.
